2008 Yellow Springs Banner Festival

March 16 through April 27

We're glad you are interested in making a banner this year, either as an individual or with a group. It would be great if clubs and church groups or a class wanted to create their own banners. It's a lot of fun, as you know if you've done it in the past, to create a banner and see it beautifying the downtown streets. And it's a chance to display art on a LARGE scale, no juries or judges!

There are lots of new brackets available downtown so there's plenty of room for lots of colorful art to brighten the early spring. In the past we have sometimes had to do two showings of banners because we had so many contributions. The village has installed more brackets recently so we do not anticipate doing that. But wouldn't it be a wonderful dilemma?

Banner Materials
You can use any material you wish. In the past banners have been made by layering and sewing ripstop nylon, painted fabrics such as canvas, satin, transparent fabrics, screening materials or plastic survey tapes, window screen . . . there are numerous possibilities. Please remember the material needs to be fairly durable since they will be exposed to the elements for at least four weeks. Wind, sun and rain can be pretty brutal so please keep that in mind.

Materials are available at Bean Bag City, 1480 W. Spring Valley, Paintersville, (937-862-7781). They also have a website: http://www.beanbag.com/. Sailrite catalogue also has a good selection of ripstop nylon (1-800-348-2769) and their website is here: http://www.sailrite.com/ Kit Merrill has a copy of this catalogue and would be happy to answer questions about fabric or banner construction. Her number is 767-1524.

Show & Tell
It is a tradition that we have an opportunity to meet each other and share our banners during a gathering of banner artists and the community. We will do that again this year before hanging the banners. Watch the yellow Springs News for the date, time and place.

At the gathering we will draw numbers for bracket position, have a slide show of past banner festivals. At this event we will provide grommets and tools to add make the banners hangable and add the rope ties. If you are not able to join us for this event please make arrangements to get your banners to us that day. Please have a title ready for your banner at that time. Bring a plate of munchies to share if you want. Drinks will be provided.

It's such a pleasure to see those beautiful, colorful creations gracing the streets of downtown Yellow Springs in the early Spring. We hope your banner will be among this year's crop. Thank you for your interest, and happy banner making.
